Celebrating Self-Expression
Face painting day has become a spring tradition in Sweet Gum Art class. We celebrate our vision of the moment by using our bodies as a temporary canvas. We also get the opportunity to pose for portraits to capture our character of the day.
Exploring the Universe
Did you know that Galileo first made ink drawings of the moon in 1609? He was observing it through a remarkable new invention: the telescope. Galileo was able to predict things about the surface of the moon because, as an experienced painter, he understood how shadow and light shows us dimension. As technology has advanced we continue to explore the far reaches of our solar system. Inspired by images from the Hubble telescope and practicing how to imply dimension in spheres like planets and moons we created our own imaginative views of celestial wonders.

Inspired by Nature
Observation is one of the most essential parts of our artistic method. We often turn to nature for design inspiration. We looked at geodes and agates for ideas as we experimented with our watercolor lines and techniques.
Sweet Gum Pet Shop
Clay is one of our favorite materials to work with. For this project we were inspired by pets, real and imagined, and practiced animal forms with layered painted details.
